The longitudinal wave speed, density, flexural mechanical properties, loss factor, and insertion loss were characterized for different compositions. The addition of 0.05wt% o-MWCNTs increased the composite flexural modulus and strength by 370% and 90% respectively with no change in the longitudinal acoustic wave speed. Analytical predictions also indicated that higher shear loss factor provided by carbon nanotubes ameliorated shear resonance at oblique insertion angles. Carbon nanotube additions afford the ability to increase mechanical properties and acoustic transparency, both of which are critical for underwater sonar windows.

Effect of Interface Structure on Mechanical Properties of Advanced Composite Materials

This paper deals with the effect of interface structures on the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composite materials. First, the background of research, development and applications on hybrid composite materials is introduced. Second, metal/polymer composite bonded structures are discussed. Then, the rationale is given for nanostructuring the interface in composite materials and struct...

Tuning Interface via Multi-scale Modeling for Superior Carbon Nanotube-polymer Nanocomposites/ Yarns

This study is concerned with finding an improved route to achieve superior properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced nanocomposites by designing their interface using multi-scale modeling. CNTs, widely used as fillers in nanocomposites, and polymer epoxy matrices, are coarse-grained and simulated via dissipative particle dynamics. Then, reverse-mapping of the coarse-grained models into ato...

Effects of Nanotube/Matrix Interface on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Mechanical Properties

In this paper, experimental and Finite Element Methods have been used to determine mechanical properties of nanocomposites. Standard tensile and compression samples with 0.0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 weight fraction of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) were prepared and tested. Nanotube weight fraction was varied to investigate the effects of nanotube weight fraction on nanocomposite...

Dynamic Characteristics of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Epoxy Composites: An Experimental Approach

The effects of amine functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CNTs weight percent (wt. %), on the first bending natural frequencies and damping properties of CNT/epoxy composites are investigated in this paper. CNTs and amine functionalized CNTs (AFCNTs), with two different weight percentages, are used to manufacture the beam shaped specimens. Epoxy, CNT/epoxy (0.25 and 0.5 wt. % of CNT...
